figs are yummy
Figs are in season, and I can tell because there are figs at work every day: sitting in baskets, cut up into salads, stewed up into sauces, poached in red wine. These are the three different kinds I found, best to worst:
1. Kadota fig = tastes like honey! Super sweet yum. They are small, light green on the outside, and pink on the inside.
2. Black Mission Fig = traditional figgy taste. Sweet, kind of like fig newtons, but fresh and not all dried up tasting. Purple-blackish on the outside, medium size, reddish inside.
3. Brown Turkey Fig = bleah. Tastes like nothing. Purple-brown on the outside, reddish on the inside.
I've been eating one or two or three Kadota figs every day. And I make my non-fig-eating coworkers eat them too.
garden: end of summer 06
Did some end-of summer gardening today. I picked all the beets out of the window box they were growing in. One of them got to a nice size, but the rest are kind of tiny. Earlier in the summer, they had gotten infested by these weird wormy bugs that wormed their way inside of the leaves -- it took a while for me to figure out why they were all droopy and brown. After that, I'd pinch them out of the leaf and squish them whenever I found one. Steve cooked the greens (now bugless) tonight for dinner, and we'll have to figure out what to do with the tiny beets.
Also:
- divided the daisies
- planted some garlic cloves from the farmer's market
- transplanted basil that had rooted in water (they look droopy)
- planted some swiss chard seeds
- sowed some lettuce seeds (maybe this time we'll eat them before they turn into monster lettuce towers)
The tomatoes and watermelons probably won't make it -- we planted the seeds too late, but it was fun. There is a possible teeny watermelon growing, and one flower on the tomato plants.
denim skirt
I got Dolly*Dolly 3, 10, 11, as well as the Coordinate Recipe book this weekend at Kinokuniya. Ack. Felt really guilty buying all that doll stuff, so finally got around to drafting and sewing a denim skirt for momoko.
I went the lazy route and did no pockets or waistbands or flaps. Ho ho. It was quick. I also hemmed my jeans today -- how did I end up buying jeans that were more than 2" too long?
Dolly*Dolly 11 is pretty cool. They have instructions for shoes! The pattern for the shoes actually look similar to what I'd tried the first time I made shoes, but ended up with bedroom slippers instead. I think the difference is that they used thinner material, and constructed it with two soles. I might give shoes another go, but this time with fabric glued onto paper?
Will be updating blog more often now that wedding is over. Maybe I will post about all the wedding projects too?
