japanese illustrators
Over the past week or two, I've learned about some amazing Japanese illustrators whose styles I really like. The things they have in common? Great line work, but interestingly, little use of different line weights. A comics/graphics/pop art sensibility. Fields of bright colors. An Asian girl as the main character. It makes me really want to try drawing something similar.
I noticed Yusuke Nakamura's work on the cover of an Asian Kung-fu Generation album. ($35 for a CD though, so we didn't get it.) His compositions are elaborate and whimsical, and the curves in his lines are very nice and precise (the arch of a nose, the tangle of a cable).
Jenny referred me to Ai Yamaguchi via the Shu by Ai cosmetic bottles. The girls are so cute, with elaborate hair and no shirts. I also like the floral and organic fabric patterns strewn across her work.
Yumiko Kayukawa was just featured on Boing Boing. Each piece centers around a great caption, with a capable model-proportioned girl and random wacky animals. Candy colors.

Here's my goodbye present for people at work.

walking kitty, finished
The finished illustration is a much more voluptuous and shapely lady. It took me forever to get her legs and feet looking ok (thanks for your help, nokii).
I think I'll have to practice ankles. Yesterday, I was trying to study them by sneaking peeks at female joggers as they passed, but it's hard to do that without looking like a weirdo.
I kept the her as an outline only, so that the focus would be on the clothes. I think it's a nice effect. The tulle trim was fun to draw -- the image on the right is a closeup. Click both for bigger img.
walking the kitty
The next fashion illustration class is a colored pencil assignment. I really don't want to do colored pencils ... the look is so outdated and I'd rather play in photoshop anyway. I wonder what she'd say if I handed in a printout that didn't follow any of the assignment rules she set :) But, I'd much rather work on something I'll be happy with, instead of pulling out an ugly piece last minute, like last time.
Here's a quick little sketch of an idea. I'm sorry it's so girly. (And her feet are too big, shh!)
jacket, mandarin collar 2
Used my coupon last weekend at JoAnn's for jacket materials. Unfortunately, the corduroys there were all hideous colors, so I ended up getting a black brocade with a flower vine pattern. 100% polyester, baby.
No silk charmeuse available either, so the lining is a thin polyester in a sagey-desaturated-teal. Too bad I didn't have time for a trip to Britex.

hoodie, almost
Made most of momoko's hoodie this past weekend, just waiting for the zipper and eyelets to get here now. Note the working pockets (pain to sew) and cute little cuffs (even bigger pain to sew).

fashionista 2
I was lazy, procrastinated, and ended up drawing a boring old stick-thin figure in a boring old outfit for the 2nd class assignment (pen & charcoal). Nice calves take time.
tiny zippers
A handy site: Tiny Zippers sells tiny notions for doll clothes. I am tempted to get a few zippers (especially for the hooded sweatshirt I'm making right now), and the buttons look so jucily delicious.
Update, 1pm: I got some zippers, buttons, and eyelets. This is going to be a kick-butt hoodie.
jacket, mandarin collar
Next project in class is a jacket. I'm going to do the Vogue 7947 in a turquoisey-light blue color, maybe in corduroy or a nubbly wool. We'll see what Joann's has -- I have a coupon for Sunday!

another 4 years...
of deceit and hidden agendas. And debt, and international ill will, and decline of civil liberties, and erosion of women's rights ... Yay.
Morality, my butt.
